Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, the team announced on Tuesday (May 12). The Grizzlies shared the news on social media, stating, "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke. Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten," according to the team’s official statement on X.
No further details about the cause of death have been made public at this time. Clarke, who had played with the Grizzlies since being drafted in 2019, was widely respected both on and off the court. The team and fans alike are mourning the loss of a player known for his positive presence and community involvement.
Earlier this year, Clarke faced legal troubles after being arrested in Cross County, Arkansas, on Wednesday, April 1. According to the Cross County Sheriff’s Department, Clarke was charged with possession and trafficking of a controlled substance, improper passing, and fleeing vehicle or conveyance exceeding the speed limit. He was released on a $25,000 bond and was expected to appear before a judge.
Despite these challenges, the Grizzlies had announced in late March that Clarke would miss the remainder of the 2025-2026 season due to a right calf strain and was expected to make a full recovery for the following season. His sudden death leaves the team and community in shock, with tributes pouring in across social media. There have been no announcements yet regarding memorial services or how the team will honor his memory
