A lucky woman in North Carolina got to share the exact moment she won a massive lottery prize with her daughter.
Vickie Darrell, of Dunn, was chatting with her daughter on the phone over the weekend as she scratched off the $30 Supreme 7s ticket she purchased at the Valero on West Cumberland Street, according to a release from the NC Education Lottery. During their talk, she discovered the ticket landed her a $100,000 prize.
"I always believed this would happen one day," she said. "It was meant to be."
Her daughter, however, was in disbelief at the win and thought her mom wasn't "seeing [the ticket] correctly." Fortunately for the Harnett County woman, she saw perfectly clearly that she scored a big win.
"For this to happen while I was on the phone with her, I can't even explain what this means to us," she said. "I'm still trying to believe it."
Darnell claimed her prize at lottery headquarters on Monday (August 11), taking home an impressive $71,758 after all required state and federal tax withholdings. She told lottery officials she plans to use her new winnings to help her family.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing," she said. "It's a blessing."
According to the lottery website, the Supreme 7s game launched in July 2024 with four top prizes of $4 million and 10 prizes of $100,000. Following Darrell's win, two top prizes and and five prizes of $100,000 remain to be claimed.
