Woman With Knife Accused Of Police Attack

(Waynesville, NC) -- A woman is accused of trying to attack a Waynesville police officer with a knife. A video reportedly shows a patrol car block the suspect from the officer on Russ Avenue on Monday afternoon. The woman allegedly still tried to charge at the officer with a pocket knife, which caused injuries to his hand. Officers arrested the suspect on two felony assault charges.

COVID Hospitalizations Rise In WNC

(Asheville, NC) -- COVID hospitalizations remain high in western North Carolina. WLOS-TV reports around 175 patients are being treated for COVID in the Mission Health system as of yesterday. More than 30 patients are being treated at Pardee. Over 80-percent are unvaccinated.

Gas Prices Rise Slightly In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- Gasoline prices in Asheville are down slightly from a week ago. GasBuddy-dot-com shows that prices are down nearly two-cents from last week to three-18-per-gallon for regular unleaded. That's close to five-cents lower than one-month ago. Price were under two-30-a-gallon in January of 2021.

Suspect Arrested For Gun, Drug Charges

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is facing gun and drug charges. Asheville police officers were conducting routine crime prevention investigations around Fairview Road when a suspect was arrested on Sunday. WLOS-TV says officers found fentanyl, two guns and cash in the raid. The man is facing five felony charges.

Wreck Closes Part Of I-26

(Henderson County, NC) -- Interstate 26 is back open after being shut down due to a wreck in Henderson County. A highway trooper told WLOS-TV that one person was airlifted to the hospital after suffering an injury near the Henderson and Polk County lines late Monday afternoon. A tractor trailer allegedly collided with a car. The driver of the semi was charged with unsafe movement.

Lawsuit Filed Against CMPD Officers For Wrongful Death

(Charlotte, NC) -- Some CMPD officers and the city of Charlotte are facing a wrongful death lawsuit. NBC Charlotte reports a woman filed legal action last week, which comes around two-years after her brother died after being in police custody. She claims officers did nothing while 41-year-old Harold Easter called out for help while having a seizure. Investigators say Easter was in possession of drugs at the time of his arrest.

Two Arrested For Rock Hill Murder

(Rock Hill, SC) -- Two suspects are behind bars for a Rock Hill murder. Officers found a man shot to death at an apartment complex on Calanese Road late Saturday night. A 19- and 21-year-old man were arrested for murder and drug charges. A bond hearing is set for today.

UNC Charlotte Resumes Classroom Instruction

(Charlotte, NC) -- In-person classes begin again at UNC Charlotte today. Students have been learning virtually since the start of the spring semester on January 10th due to rising COVID cases. Vaccination proof or a negative test is required from staff and students to attend classes in-person. Vaccinations are offered every Thursday and Friday on-campus.

American Airlines Cuts Charlotte Flights

(Charlotte, NC) -- American Airlines is reducing its flight loads in Charlotte this spring. The Charlotte Business Journal reports the airline is cutting out roughly 800 flights in March at C-L-T, as well as thousands more at three other major cities. The cuts were made to align with demand.

No Charges Will Be Filed Against Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy For 2021 Shooting

(Johnston County, NC) -- The Johnston County District Attorney's Office has announced it will not file charges against a local sheriff's deputy in relation to the shooting of a suspect last year. Court records show that on May 5th of 2021, Detective Michael Wilson shot Oshea Massey once in the wrist while sitting in a car, after Massey refused a command to show his hands and appeared to be reaching for a weapon. District Attorney Susan Doyle said based on the investigation, Wilson was legally justified in his actions.

New Omicron Subvariant Discovered In Central North Carolina

(Durham, NC) -- Doctors at Duke University Medical Center have confirmed that a new COVID subvariant of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, has been found in central North Carolina. Scientists say the subvariant, also known as the "stealth omicron" or BA2, doesn't appear as positive on PCR COVID-19 tests, but doesn't immediately register as the omicron variant. A tracking of the "stealth omicron" variant in other countries has found that it also spreads more easily than previous variants. However, there is no evidence to date that it causes more severe illness.

Some Triangle School Districts Will Operate On A Two Hour Delay Again Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- A few central North Carolina school districts have decided to operate on a two hour delay for a second day today, as a safety precaution against icy roads. Weather forecasters say some shaded roads in higher elevations of the Triangle, could still have some lingering black in the early morning hours of Tuesday. Edgecombe County, Johnston County and Halifax counties, will all begin classes two hours later today.

House Panel Meets For First Time To Discuss Future Of Public Education In The State

(Raleigh, NC) -- A group of North Carolina House members, formed to examine and make recommendations on the future of K-12 schools, held their first meeting on Monday. The House Select Committee on Education for North Carolina's Future, devised a list of issues it plans to research over the next few months, including expanding the number of teachers and non-teacher staff , parental involvement and basic literacy. The panel plans to have its first report ready for review by May.

Troops At Ft. Bragg And Across The Country On Standby For Possible Deployment To Ukraine

(Fort Bragg, NC) -- Around 85-hundred military troops nationwide, including soldiers at Fort Bragg, have been placed on heightened alert amid concerns about a possible invasion of Russia into Ukraine. The Pentagon gave the order Monday for the U.S. military to be on standby. Spokesperson John Kirby said the U.S. and its NATO allies will be ready to rapidly deploy to the region if its interests are jeopardized.

Forsythe County Reports 8 More Deaths from COVID

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Officials say eight more people have died in Forsyth County from COVID. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services also reports that as of Monday, new cases continue to remain at near record levels across the county. As of Monday, there were just under 29-hundred new cases reported in Forsyth between Friday and Monday afternoon. Since the pandemic began, Forsyth County has seen 668 COVID-related deaths.

Second Suspect Arrested for Connection to Missing Man's Death

(Greensboro, NC) -- Police say two suspects have now been arrested after a missing man was found dead earlier this month. Twenty-year-old Rysyrus Maurice Whitehurst, of Greensboro, was found deceased in the 58-hundred block of Old Randleman Road. His family reported him missing on January 12th. The next day, Tahj Jahmier Johnson-Harris, who is 22 and from Greensboro, was charged with first-degree murder. Then on Monday the 24th, Ozahrie Lee Brooks of Greensboro was charged with being an accessory to murder - he's now being held in the Guilford County Jail.

Man Being Held For Guns, Weapons Charges after Struggling with Officers

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A 34-year-old man has been arrested on guns and drug charges after he allegedly physically fought officers who were trying to arrest him. During the struggle Sunday in the 1400 block of South Broad Street, Levon Click, fired off a round that reportedly barely missed one of the officers and tried multiple other times to shoot them. Three officers were eventually able to get the gun out of Click's hands and arrest him. The officers were not hurt. Click was treated at the scene for a minor cut to his mouth. In searching Click's car, police also found a second handgun and about 56 grams of marijuana.

Teen's Family Lawyers Up After He Reportedly Was Vaccinated Against Will

(Guilford County, NC) -- The family of a student who says he was vaccinated without his or his family's consent at a Guilford County Schools vaccine clinic has hired an attorney. The 14-year-old student, a football player who was told he had to be tested in order to keep playing, was driven to the testing site in August by his stepfather who stayed in the car while he went inside. The teen says he thought he was just being tested, but realized that wasn't the case when he saw he was going to get a shot. School officials say they tried to get a hold of his mother but couldn't reach her. The teen's statement says they didn't try to speak with the student's stepfather.

Culver's To Open Second Location in Triad

(Greensboro, NC) -- Culver's, the butter burger and frozen custard franchise from Wisconsin, will soon be opening a second location in the Triad. The broker for the transaction tells the Triad Business Journal that the second restaurant will be just north of Interstate 40 on Union Cross Road in Kernersville. The restaurant is expected to open in late summer 2022. Culver's opened its first Triad location late this summer on Fairlawn Drive in Winston-Salem. Culver's has over 800 locations in the Midwest, with 12 of them now in North Carolina
