Asheville police arrest parents of child believe to overdose on opioid

Asheville police arrested both parents of a young child alleged to have overdosed on what was suspected to be an opioid and charged them with felony child abuse early Friday morning, Oct. 23.

Police said Laquanda Lyanda Duncan, 29, of Asheville, and Shabazz Nygel Tucker, 26, of Asheville, have been charged with felony child abuse.

Detectives with the Asheville Police Department assigned to the Buncombe County Family Justice Center (FJC) were notified Oct. 1 of child abuse allegations which included a young child overdosing. Their investigation began immediately.

Duncan and Tucker initially received a $30,000 secured bond, but both have since been released from custody.

During the course of the arrests of Tucker and Duncan, detectives said they developed reason to believe Nilson Javier Bonilla, a fugitive from a Sept. 18, 2018 armed robbery in west Asheville was inside the home.
