Two contractors died in a fire at Canton's paper mill early Monday morning, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.

Town leaders said it’s a tragic loss, but the situation could have been much worse. They said the response kept things in check.

Fire broke out at the Evergreen Packaging shortly after 5 a.m. Monday.

“Ladder trucks showed up, got water on it pretty quickly,” Canton Fire Chief Tim Carver said.

Carver said Evergreen's emergency response team was first into action, then crews came from all around. Plant manager Wally McDonald said the fire started in a tank being repaired during a maintenance outage.

“It was contained to one area, and the evac was in place. The evacuation was taking place, and it went smooth,” Carver said.
