(Rutherford County, NC) -- The cause of a small plane crash is being investigated in Rutherford County. WYFF-TV is reporting the aircraft went down in the woods after leaving the Hendersonville airport on Sunday afternoon. One adult and three juveniles were taken to hospitals with injuries not thought to be life-threatening. Witnesses told Rutherford County emergency officials that the plane went into a flat spin before crashing.

Woman Shot In Head In Asheville Apartment

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are investigating a shooting that seriously injured a 19-year-old woman. Officers say she was shot through the wall from a neighboring unit at the Hillcrest Apartments around noon on Saturday. The bullet reportedly struck her in the head, and she was last listed in critical but stable condition. Investigators spent the day talking with neighbors, but no arrests have been announced.

Asheville Hotel Case Goes To NC Supreme Court

(Asheville, GA) -- A case between the city of Asheville and a hotel development group is being heard in the state's high court today. Parks Hospitality Group originally proposed to construct an Embassy Suites hotel and parking deck on Haywood Street, but the city council voted it down three years ago. Parks' officials told the Citizen-Times that the city turned down a settlement of over four-million-dollars, which included money for affordable housing and for the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. A Buncombe County Superior Court judge sided with the developers in 2017 over a conditional use permit for the property.

Officer-Involved Shooting Investigated In Cherokee

(Cherokee, NC) -- The FBI is piecing together details from an officer-involved shooting in Cherokee. An officer with the Cherokee Indian Police Department reportedly shot a man after a wreck in the Big Cove area of the Qualla Boundary Saturday morning. Investigators say the man was armed. The seriousness of his injuries is unclear.

Asheville Mall Putting Youth Supervision Policy In Place

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville Mall is instituting a new youth supervision policy. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 21 years-old beginning January 17th. The policy will be in effect after 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Mall representatives say a growing number of unsupervised youths have been causing problems. The mall was forced to close early on December 28th after a fight among juveniles.

Winter Weather Threatening Mountains Overnight

(Asheville, NC) -- More winter weather is heading towards western North Carolina. The National Weather Service is calling for a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain for the northern mountains and foothills beginning tonight and into the Tuesday morning commute. It's all expected to turn over to rain once temperatures start to rise. Gusty winds are also expected in the northwestern part of the state this morning.

School Closes Due To Lack Of Funding

(Charlotte, NC) -- An east Charlotte private school is shutting down. The principal at Legacy Preparatory School advised families through an email Friday that an investor failed to provide additional funding for the school's scholarships. Students were scheduled to head back to class from the holiday break tomorrow, but will now have to find a new place to attend. Nearly 200 kids attended the school's classes at the Park Expo and Conference Center.

Officer Killed In Line Of Duty At Florence Airport

(Florence, SC) -- A suspect is in jail for the murder of a police officer at Florence Regional Airport in South Carolina. The state's Law Enforcement Division says 26-year-old officer Jackson Winkeler was shot to death during a traffic stop on Sunday morning. The suspect was arrested trying to flee the scene. It is reportedly first time a law enforcement officer has been killed in the line of duty in the U.S. in 2020.

Changes At CLT Today For Lobby Expansion

(Charlotte, NC) -- Travelers can expect a few changes at Charlotte Douglas International Airport beginning today. Construction crews are starting the first stages of the 600-million-dollar lobby expansion project. The Daily North Lot is closed so a power station for the new lobby can be built. The airport is also closing Doors One and Two on the upper and lower levels. The entire expansion is expected to take five years.

Suspected Drunk Driver Slams Into Home

(Charlotte, NC) -- A driver is suspected of being drunk when he slammed into a west Charlotte home Friday night. His truck crashed through the front door of the home on Freedom Drive, but luckily two people inside were unharmed. Johnathan Hensley was treated for minor injuries and charged with DWI. The home owner told WSOC-TV that his house has now been hit twice since Freedom Drive was widened.

Suspect Connected To Rowan Murder Arrested On More Charges

(Rowan County, NC) -- A man charged in connection with a 2018 murder in Rowan County is facing trouble again. Rowan County deputies say Cory Harrington was arrested on Saturday after they stopped him in a stolen car on Stokes Ferry Road. He was already on the county's most wanted list for another car theft from November. Harrington allegedly used a murder victim's credit cards after she was shot to death inside her Dulin Avenue home.

Gaston County Ministry Helps Family After Death Of Mother

(Gaston County, NC) -- A Gaston County ministry is helping a local family get back on its feet. WSOC-TV says Florence McCorkle-Eury with Risa's Special Delivery pulled together a donation drive for the family of Kelly Mathis after she was struck and killed by a car in Cherryville last month. She delivered clothing items and food recently for Mathis' seven children. Christmas is already covered for 2020, too.

Man Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff In Knightdale

(Knightdale, NC) -- A man who held off police in Knightdale for hours on Sunday is in custody this morning. Knightdale Police went to the home in the Widewaters neighborhood to serve an outstanding warrant on James Holway. Police say the 48-year-old Holway said he had a gun so they told people living nearby to leave. Wake County Sheriff's Tactical Response Team deputies fired a non-lethal round at Holway after two hours of negotiations and arrested him.

NC State Police Seek Suspect After Shots Fired Into House

(Raleigh, NC) -- NC State Police are hunting for the person who fired shots into a home on Centennial Campus early Sunday. Police say a man fired several shots as he was leaving a party overnight. No one was injured. The suspect is described as a black man in his early 20s, five-nine to six feet tall with a thin to medium build and short hair with twists.

Fort Bragg Troops Deployed To Middle East

(Fort Bragg, NC) -- Thousands of troops from Fort Bragg are deploying to the Middle East as tension in the region continues to build. Close to three-thousand troops from the 82nd Airborne Division were deployed Saturday in response to increased threat levels against U.S. personnel in the region. This follows last week's killing of Iran's top military commander by a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad.

(Raleigh, NC) -- Hundreds of people gathered outside Raleigh's Halifax Mall Sunday afternoon to protest what they fear could be a move toward war in the Middle East. The demonstration was led by a group called Veterans for Peace, whose members say they know the realities of war too well. Veterans for Peace led a protest in Durham on Saturday.

Child Critical After Crash In Guilford Co.

(Guilford Co., NC) -- A seven-year-old child is in critical condition after a crash in Guilford County. It happened around 5 p.m. Saturday on Harlow Drive. Troopers say an F250 crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Toyota Camry head-on. Shea Requejo-Croft and her husband, Luis Requejo, were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. A nine-year-old child in the car with them suffered minor injuries, and a seven-year-old child is in life-threatening condition. Charges are pending.

Driver In Deadly Hit-And-Run Turns Herself In

(Greensboro, NC) -- The driver in a deadly hit-and-run in Greensboro is facing charges. Officers say the 76-year-old Burlington woman turned herself in Saturday afternoon. They say she was behind the wheel of a car that hit Earnest Cook near South Swing Road and Tri-Port Court earlier that morning. The victim's family says he was on his way home from work when he was hit.

(Rutherford Co., NC) -- Four people are hurt after a plane wreck in Rutherford County. It happened yesterday near Polk County Line and Frank's Ridge roads. Fire officials say the small plane crashed in the woods. One victim was rushed to St. Luke's in Columbus, and the other three were taken to Mission Hospital. It's not clear what caused the plane to go down.

Teen Charged In Burlington Shooting

(Burlington, NC) -- A teenager is facing charges in connection with a shooting that sent two people to the hospital. Police were called to Styles Thompson Road just before 2 p.m. Saturday about a disturbance. A young woman was shot in the ankle and a young man was shot in the leg. Officers arrested a 17-year-old boy and took him to a juvenile detention facility. They say more arrests are possible.
