(Fayetteville, NC) -- Charges are expected to be upgraded against a Fayetteville woman accused of beating her boyfriend's mother to death with a frying pan. Twenty-one-year-old Abigail Tipton made her first court appearance Monday to face charges of voluntary manslaughter in the death of 67-year-old Maria Adame. The incident happened late Friday night inside a house located in the 200-block of South Cool Springs Street. Police say the two women got into a fight after one of them let a dog off its leash and the animal was hit by a car.

Banking Giant Truist To Begin Operations Today From Charlotte Headquarters

(Charlotte, NC) -- As of midnight, the merger between banking giants BB&T and SunTrust banks became official. Starting today, the combined banks will operate under the single name of 'Truist,' the sixth largest bank in the U.S. with an estimated 10-million customers. The merger has been valued at 66-billion dollars. Truist is headquartered in Charlotte.

Famed Inventor Of UPC Bar Code Dies

(Wendell, NC) -- Funeral services were held Monday in Wendell for a North Carolina engineer who is credited with inventing the 'Universal Product Code', more commonly known as the 'UPC bar code'. George Laurer developed the technology while working with IBM in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park in the early 1970's. The invention transformed retail and other industries throughout the world. Lauer, who died last Thursday, was 94.

UNC Chapel Hill Leaders Being Pressured To Speak Out

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- Faculty members at UNC Chapel Hill are now demanding that the school's leadership speak out about a controversial settlement reached with the Sons of the Confederacy over removal of the Confederate monument 'Silent Sam.' In exchange for the statue being removed and stored in a warehouse, the school agreed to pay the group two-point-five-million dollars to help with care and upkeep. At a special meeting of the Faculty Executive Committee Monday, the group called on the system's interim Chancellor and Provost to say they are opposed to the payment.

NC State Disputes Most Serious NCAA Allegations

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina State University submitted a response Monday to a 'Notice of Allegations' received from the NCAA back in July regarding a former basketball player. At issue are charges that the parents of former point guard Dennis Smith Jr. were paid some 40-thousand dollars in exchange for him signing with NC State out of high school. The response said the school "strenuously disputes" Level One accusations of recruiting violations, citing lack of documentation, but accepts the Level Two or Level Three charges related to complimentary admissions to basketball games.

North Carolina Teacher Charged With Sending Inappropriate Photos

(Jacksonville, NC) -- A North Carolina teacher has been arrested on allegations of sending inappropriate photos of herself to two of her male students. Thirty-two-year-old Ashley Henson Beasley is facing two counts of indecent liberties with a child and indecent liberties with a student by a teacher. Court documents show the relationships involved two 14-year- old male students at Hunter's Creek Middle School in Jacksonville. Beasley remains in the Onslow County Jail under 80-thousand dollars bond.

Pastor Of Large Catholic Church Accused Of Sexual Abuse

(Charlotte, NC) -- The pastor of the largest Catholic church in Charlotte is accused of sexually abusing a minor. Father Patrick Hoare of St. Matthew is on administrative leave following allegations of sexual abuse dating back to the 1990s. The Diocese of Charlotte says a man came forward, alleging Father Hoare sexually abused him when he was a child in Pennsylvania. Father Hoare will not be active at the church until an investigation is complete.

Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Deputy Breaks Arm While Apprehending Suspect

(Stanley, NC) -- A Lincoln County sheriff's deputy is recovering from a broken arm following a vehicle and foot chase. The scene unfolded early yesterday morning while deputies were trying to stop an SUV on Highway 73. Jhamari Sowell is accused of leading deputies on a high-speed chase before crashing along Highway 16 at Ben McLain Lane in Stanley. Deputy M. Farra suffered a broken arm while pursuing the suspect, who took off on foot. Sowell was also hurt and is expected to be charged once he's released from the hospital.

Five-Year-old Boy Killed During Christmas Parade

(Bluffton, SC) -- A five-year-old boy is dead after an accident at a Christmas parade in South Carolina. It happened Saturday at the Bluffton Christmas Parade in Beaufort County. Police say Ameer Frazier was being dropped off in an elementary school parking lot where the parade route ended when he was killed. They're still not quite sure what happened. An autopsy is planned for today.

Teen Charged With Making Threat Against Durham High School

(Durham, NC) -- A 16-year-old is being charged with a felony for a social media post threatening violence at a Durham school. The Durham County Sheriff's Office says the teen is charged with making a false report concerning mass violence on educational property stemming from an alleged threat against Jordan High School last month. The teen's name is not being released by the sheriff's office.

Orange County Board Rules Confederate Flag On Property Too Large

(Hillsborough, NC) -- The Orange County Board of Adjustment ruled on Monday that a large Confederate flag on a man's Hillsborough property is too large. The flag off Highway 70, at about four-hundred square feet, is on the property of Robert Hall. The Orange County Board of Commissioners enacted the flag ordinance last year. Hall said yesterday he plans to file a lawsuit to keep the flag up.

NC State Responds To NCAA Allegations

(Raleigh, NC) -- NC State is responding to a notice of allegations from the NCAA concerning former basketball star Dennis Smith Jr. NC State on Monday questioned the evidence of a 40-thousand-dollar payment to Smith from former Adidas associate T.J. Gassnola, as well as the truthfulness of Gassnola's testimony during a federal fraud trial last year. The school is suggesting in its response that it should lose a scholarship as one of several penalties, but the NCAA could go further, including a postseason ban.

Man Credited With Developing UPC Dies

(Wendell, NC) -- George Laurer, the man who developed the barcode, has died. Laurer passed away at his home in Wendell, North Carolina at the age of 94. He helped create the Universal Product Code while working for IBM in Research Triangle Park. Laurer worked for IBM for over three decades, according to a funeral listing. Services will be held in Wendell on Monday.

Tillis Files For Re-Election

(Raleigh, NC) -- Senator Thom Tillis is running for re-election, as he made it official on Monday. Tillis touted his endorsement from President Trump and told reporters in Raleigh yesterday that he'll be a "definite no" on convicting Trump of impeachment if the Senate receives the matter for a trial. No one else has officially filed as a Republican for a primary race against Tillis.

Man Wanted In High Point Shooting, Robbery

(High Point, NC) -- High Point police are looking for a man who shot another man during a drug deal. The victim met up with 24-year-old Marvin Bostic Friday to buy illegal narcotics. Police say that's when Bostic robbed the victim at gunpoint and then shot him in the leg. He's wanted for armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury. Charges Filed In Davidson Co. Hit-And-Run

(Davidson Co., NC) -- Davidson County's district attorney is filing charges against a person of interest in the hit-and-run death of a High Point man. The accident happened early Saturday morning on N.C. 109 near the Sheetz gas station. Timothy Dickens was hit and killed by a Chevy heavy-duty truck. Authorities say they were able to identify the driver with the help of surveillance footage and wreckage left at the scene. Their name won't be released until they're in custody.

Ceiling Of Greensboro Bojangles Collapses

(Greensboro, NC) -- No one is hurt after the ceiling of a Bojangles restaurant in Greensboro collapsed. It happened Friday at the restaurant on Hickory Ridge Drive. There's still no word on what caused the collapse. Bojangles is currently serving customers in the drive-thru. The dining area is expected to reopen tomorrow.

Vacant Winston-Salem Home Destroyed In Fire

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A vacant home in Winston-Salem is completely destroyed after a fire tore through it. It broke out last night at a two-story home on the corner of Tech and Southdale avenues. Fire officials say no one lives at the home, and they're still trying to contact the owner. The cause is under investigation.
