Suspect Shot After Man Assaulted In Macon County

(Macon County, NC) -- Macon County investigators are looking into a Wednesday morning shooting that injured one. Sheriff Robert Holland says the suspect broke into his ex-wife's Tiger Lily Trail home and beat a man with a pipe. The ex-wife allegedly shot the suspect in the head in retaliation. Both the suspect and victim were taken to the hospital in critical condition. WLOS-TV says the suspect was already wanted for first-degree burglary in Henderson County.

Education Board Plans To Eliminate History Requirement For Financial Class

(Raleigh, NC) -- A new financial class requirement in North Carolina high schools likely means cutting another subject. The News & Observer is reporting state education officials decided Wednesday that one of two American History courses currently required will need to be removed. State lawmakers approved the new personal finance course earlier this year, which will mandate all freshmen starting in 2020-2021 to take the class before graduation. One state board member said eliminating one American History course was the best scenario.

Water Main Break Causes Flooding On Asheville Road

(Asheville, NC) -- Some residents in Asheville are under a boil water advisory due to a water main break that flooded Brevard Road. A crew for Dominion Energy clipped the main while attempting to install a gas line Wednesday morning. The advisory was issued for the area of Brevard Road between the Blue Ridge Parkway and I-26. The city will lift the advisory once water tests come back okay.

Female Wrestlers Make History At West Henderson High

(Henderson County, NC) -- High school female wrestlers are making history in western North Carolina. The Citizen-Times is reporting the West Henderson High girls wrestling team hosted the state's first-ever female dual meet on Tuesday. The match involved the girls team from Swain County, who won 30-to-26. A one-year trial for a women's invitational was just approved by the state last year.

Buncombe County Commission Selects Vice Chair

(Buncombe County, NC) -- The new vice chair for the Buncombe County Commission is Robert Pressley. The district three Republican was unanimously approved at the commission meeting Tuesday night. Pressley was elected to district three in 2016. He called it an honor to be unanimously chosen.

U.S. Cellular Encouraging Youth To Support Humanitarian Efforts

(Asheville, NC) -- U.S. Cellular is continuing an initiative to encourage youth to be humanitarians. Nominations are being taken now through April for the 5th annual "The Future of Good" program. Residents can nominate children between six-and-17-years old who are involved in helping causes in their communities. The winner receives ten-thousand-dollars to go towards their cause. Three children from North Carolina have been selected before.

Remains Linked To Missing Charlotte Woman

(Iredell County, NC) -- Remains found earlier this year in Mooresville are those of a missing Charlotte woman. Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said Wednesday that DNA from a tooth confirmed the identity of the remains to be Anastasia Meaders, who was last seen alive in June 2016. Investigators consider the case a homicide, as autopsy results reveal Meaders was shot in the head. The plan is to question a man who's serving time in prison for the attempted murder of Meader's mother.

Rivera Gives Final Briefing After Firing

(Charlotte, NC) -- Ron Rivera is looking forward to coaching again. He gave his final briefing at Bank of America Stadium yesterday, one day after news broke that the Panthers were parting ways with the nine-year head coach. Rivera spoke on his family's love for the Carolinas and the character of the team. The Panthers are at five-and-seven on the season, but he leaves as the winningest coach in franchise history with 76 victories. Rivera added that his biggest regret was not winning the Super Bowl.

Wreck Kills One In West Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a deadly wreck in west Charlotte. One person died in a collision between a tractor trailer and two cars on Old Mount Holly Road near Moores Chapel Road Wednesday afternoon. Officers say the driver who died allegedly failed to yield the right of way. A separate crash involving a horse trailer caused a shutdown of I-77 South in Huntersville last night.

WSOC-TV is reporting officers of the CMPD were out yesterday handing out gift cards and cash to some unsuspecting people. The officers also stopped by Classroom Central in west Charlotte to give away cash that will be used for classroom supplies.

Expansion At Convention Center Begins

(Charlotte, NC) -- Construction is beginning for a large expansion at the Charlotte Convention Center. City leaders held a groundbreaking for the 126-million-dollar project on Wednesday. Plans include modernization, 50-thousand-square feet of extra space and a pedestrian bridge that connects to the Westin Hotel. Completion is expected in 2021.

Stadium Tour Featuring Def Leppard And Others Coming To Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Some heavy rock-and-roll hitters from the 80s are heading to Bank of America Stadium. Live Nation announced yesterday that The Stadium Tour featuring Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts is coming to Charlotte on July 11th. Tickets go on sale one week from Friday. The tour is stopping at 22 cities next summer.

Witnesses Say 12 Shots Fired In Raleigh Business Park Armed Robbery

(Raleigh, NC) -- Police are looking for suspects in an armed robbery at a Raleigh business park. It happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses say as many as 12 shots were fired during the holdup at Progress Court, just off Whitaker Mill Drive. They also say the robbers took off in several vehicles.

Three Arrested After Drive-By Shooting At North Durham Apartments

(Durham, NC) -- Three people are in custody after a stolen car crashed following a drive-by shooting at apartments in north Durham. Police believe the car was used in the shooting. Shots hit three apartments but police say no one was injured.

Wake Forest Cancels Christmas Parade Over Disruption Fears

(Wake Forest, NC) -- Wake Forest is canceling its Christmas parade because of concerns it might be disrupted by a local Confederate group that plans to march. The nonprofit that organizes the parade, the Wake Forest Downtown Incorporated , announced Wednesday its board of directors voted to cancel the parade that was scheduled for December 14th. Wake Forest follows Gardner, which canceled its December 7th Christmas parade over worries it might be disrupted because of a Sons of Confederate Downtown Veterans float.

(Undated) -- NC State ran away from Wisconsin after half-time in a 69-54 win last night in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge at PNC Arena. Jericole Hellems led the Wolfpack with a career-high 23 points. UNC couldn't come up with much offense in a 74-49 loss to unbeaten Ohio State at the Smith Center. The Tar Heels' ACC-Big 10 Challenge loss leaves them at 6-2.

Woman Carjacked Near High Point Medical Center

(High Point, NC) -- Police are looking for the two suspects who stole a woman's car right outside of High Point Medical Center. The victim told officers she was helping her mother into a wheelchair last Friday when the crooks got into her vehicle and drove away. Wayne Hartel and Megan Lynn are wanted on several charges, including robbery and financial card fraud. Anyone with information is urged to call High Point PD.

Man Arrested After Four-Car Crash In Rockingham Co.

(Rockingham Co., NC) -- A man wanted on outstanding warrants is under arrest after a four-car crash in Rockingham County. It happened yesterday morning on U.S. 220, near N.C. 704. Troopers say the chain-reaction crash was caused by a disabled SUV that was left abandoned in the southbound lanes. The owner of the abandoned SUV was charged with impeding traffic, and another driver involved in the crash, Devin Thore, was arrested on warrants that date back to 2009. No one was badly hurt.

Person Wanted In Deadly Shooting In Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a young man in front of a home in Greensboro. The scene unfolded just before 11 a.m. yesterday in the Dudley Heights area. Police say 21-year-old Aaron Thomas was found shot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died. Police are looking for a dark-colored sedan in connection with the killing and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Construction Underway On Winston-Salem Pedestrian Bridge

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A pedestrian bridge in Winston-Salem is undergoing a makeover. The Green Street pedestrian bridge renovation is part of a two-million-dollar project to beautify the city. Officials with the Creative Corridors Coalition, which is funding the project, say the iconic structure will serve as a gateway to downtown. The whole project is expected to be completed in the middle of next year.

North Carolina Consumers Over $7K In Credit Card Debt

(Undated) -- North Carolina ranks in the top 15 of states with the highest consumer credit card debt. A new report by Credit-Cards-dot-com compared debt-to-household income in each state and determined how long it would take to pay off that debt. The amount of interest paid was also a criteria in measuring the consumer debt burden. North Carolina ranks 14th highest in the nation with an average of about 72-hundred dollars charged by credit card holders.
