Winter Weather Advisory In Effect
(Asheville, NC) -- A cold front is sweeping through western North Carolina today. Most of the region is under a winter weather advisory until Wednesday morning, with rain, wind and snow factoring in to what could be treacherous driving conditions. Higher elevations could see up to four inches of snow, while as much as two inches may fall in the valleys. Temperatures will drop through the day before bottoming out in the teens overnight.
DOT Ready To Clear Streets
(Buncombe County, NC) -- DOT crews are ready to tackle the streets today as an arctic system hits the state. Employees were on hand in Buncombe County yesterday to prepare spreaders and plows ahead of the weather. An engineer told WLOS-TV that the first winter weather of the year catches people off guard, so give yourself extra time if traveling today. Madison County schools have closed for the day, while others like Avery, Jackson, Swain and Mitchell are on delays.
Search For Juveniles Extends Into WNC
(Black Mountain, NC) -- The search for two juveniles who escaped a youth development center is extending into the mountains. They disappeared from the Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center just outside Charlotte on Sunday afternoon. WLOS-TV is reporting the pair may have been in the Black Mountain area near Asheville yesterday. Public Safety officials say there is a high degree of concern about their safety due to the unpredictability of juvenile behavior during an escape.
Macon County Dispute Ends In Death
(Macon County, NC) -- Sheriff's officials in Macon County are investigating a dispute between neighbors that ended in a death. The victim told investigators that his neighbor struck him with a car on Sunday afternoon. Both men called 911. The suspect then reportedly walked into the woods and shot himself to death. He initially claimed he had been receiving threats before the apparent suicide.
Asheville Police Investigating Rash Of Vandalism
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking for whoever's responsible for a rash of vandalism last Friday. Nearly 30 cases were reported along Haywood Road and Patton Avenue in west Asheville, with damages to car windows, windshields and mailboxes. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from a camera in the neighborhood.
City Council Discusses Census Tonight
(Asheville, NC) -- The Asheville City Council plans to discuss the upcoming census at tonight's meeting. Members are expected to consider a plan to work with the Census Bureau and state officials to raise awareness locally about the importance of the census. The amount of federal funding that comes into Buncombe County will be determined in part by population count. Officials are looking to raise the participation level to 80-percent in 2020, which is up from 76-percent in 2010.
Suspect Connected To Charlotte And Lancaster Murders
(Charlotte, NC) -- Investigators are looking for a man now accused of two murders in the Charlotte area. The CMPD says Derek McIlwain allegedly shot a friend to death at a townhome in Ballantyne last Thursday. McIlwain is also wanted for reportedly killing his girlfriend earlier this year in Lancaster County. There's now a multi-state manhunt for the 41-year-old.
Carowinds Fined After Contractor's Hand Severed
(Fort Mill, SC) -- The parent company of Carowinds is being forced to pay thousands for safety violations. The South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration found six issues after a contractor's hand was severed at the top of the Windseeker ride this Spring. The man was inspecting the 300-foot-tall tower at the time of the accident. The fines equal 42-thousand-dollars. Carowinds is challenging the decision.
CMPD Officer Recovering After Being Hit By Car
(Charlotte, NC) -- A CMPD officer is recovering from injuries after an alleged drunk driver hit his patrol car Sunday morning. Investigators say the suspect hit the cruiser of Officer Justin Harris at a speed of 65-miles-an-hour while he was blocking traffic for a crash on I-85. Harris suffered a concussion as a result. The suspect was arrested for DWI, but more charges could be coming.
City Council Discussing Silver Line Light Rail Tonight
(Charlotte, NC) -- The Charlotte City Council could make a major decision on the proposed Silver Line light rail at its meeting tonight. On the agenda is a 50-million-dollar contract to plan the new line from Matthews to Belmont. The light rail would reportedly also makes stops in uptown and at the airport. It will take several years of planning before construction begins.
I-440 West Ramp To Wade Avenue Closed For 2 Years
(Raleigh, NC) -- The ramp from Interstate 440 West to eastbound Wade Avenue is closed for two years. The ramp was shut down at 11 p.m. Monday ahead of improvements to the freeway in west Raleigh. DOT will have signs directing drivers to a detour past Wade Avenue to the Hillsborough Street exit. A temporary ramp will handle traffic from eastbound Wade Avenue to I-440 West during construction that's scheduled to wrap up in late 2021.
Chemical Sends 6 Clayton Assisted Living Center Residents To Hospital
(Clayton, NC) -- Six people wound up in the hospital and an assisted living center in Clayton was evacuated Monday morning because of a chemical that was sprayed on a metal cart. Two employees at the Springbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center said a chemical odor made them sick around 8 a.m. Hazmat crews found the odor came from a chemical that was sprayed on the wheels of a metal cart to loosen rusted or frozen parts. The spray that's sold in a number of hardware stores around the Triangle is meant to be used in a well-ventilated area.
Gas Prices Lower Than Last Year
(Undated) -- Holiday travel won't cost as much as last year because gas prices around North Carolina are a lot lower. Triple-A reports the average price of regular is two-41 a gallon this week. That's 17 cents a gallon less than this time last year. The travel group says drivers shouldn't see much of a price jump going into the holidays.
Canes Losing Streak Ends With 8-2 Win Over Ottawa
(Raleigh, NC) -- The Hurricanes' four-game losing streak is over after an 8-2 win over Ottawa at PNC Arena last night. Sebastian Aho had two goals, the first one on a short-handed shift. The eight goals are a season high for the Canes. Goalie Petr Mrazek stopped 26 Senators shots in his eighth win of the season.
Three Teens Arrested In Connection With Shooting, Chase
(High Point, NC) -- Three teenagers are under arrest on suspicion of shooting a man in High Point and then leading police on a chase. Several shots were fired around 10:30 yesterday morning near East Green Drive and Brentwood Street. The suspects led police on a chase and reportedly threw a firearm and narcotics from their vehicle. It was stopped with the help of "stop sticks" at Boyce Avenue and Barlow Street. Eighteen-year-old Ishman Archie and two 17-year-olds were taken into custody for attempted murder and other charges. A man who police believe was struck by the gunfire showed up at a local hospital and is expected to be okay.
Manhunt Underway For NC Marine In Virginia Murder
(Jacksonville, NC) -- A manhunt is underway for a U.S. Marine accused in the shooting death of a man in rural Virginia. Authorities say 22-year-old Michael Brown left his post last month at Camp Lejeune. He's wanted in the weekend murder of 54-year-old Rodney Brown in Hardy, Virginia. Brown is believed to be carrying a high-powered rifle. Craven County sheriff's deputies say he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Greensboro Plane Slides Off Runway In Chicago During Snowstorm
(Chicago, IL) -- No one is hurt after a plane from the Piedmont Triad Airport slid off a runway at O'Hare Airport in Chicago. American Airlines officials say the plane lost traction yesterday morning due to icy conditions. All 38 passengers and three crew members were safely taken to the terminal. The Chicago airport was forced to cancel more than 180 flights due to the snowy conditions.
Boy Hit By Car In Thomasville
(Thomasville, NC) -- A 12-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a car in Thomasville. The accident happened Sunday afternoon on Upper Lake Road, near the Wayside Tabernacle Freewill Baptist Church. Troopers say Rodney Trivette, of Brown Middle School, was rollerblading on the side of the road when he was hit by a car. So far, no charges have been filed.
Student Injured In Chem Class Released From Hospital
(Greensboro, NC) -- The Western Guilford High School student who was injured during a chemistry explosion last week is back home from the hospital. "FOX 8" says 16-year-old Aimee Green was released from the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center burn clinic yesterday afternoon. She was hurt last Wednesday when an experiment containing ethanol, alcohol and salt exploded. The chemistry teacher is suspended pending the results of an investigation.
