UNC Charlotte Shooting Suspect Pleads Guilty

(Charlotte, NC) -- The suspect accused of killing a college student from Waynesville is pleading guilty. Riley Howell was one of two victims killed when Trystan Terrell opened fire on the campus of UNC Charlotte in April. Terrell pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder in court yesterday. Howell was credited with tackling Terrell during the shooting, potentially saving more lives.

Two Suspects Sought In East Asheville Shooting

(Asheville, NC) -- Police are looking for two suspects in an east Asheville shooting. Officers found a man with gunshot injuries sitting in a car on Kent Street early Thursday morning. Two people were seen running away from nearby. The victim was last said to be in serious condition.

Law Passes To Guarantee Testing Of Rape Kits

(Raleigh, NC) -- A new state law requires the timely testing of sexual assault kits. Law enforcement officials must send the kits to the state crime lab within 45 days of collection. The Survivor Act bill was signed into law yesterday. Attorney General Josh Stein says it may take two-or-three years to clear up 15-thousand untested rape kits. Those untested kits will be the state's first priority.

Forest City Man Arrested For Child Abuse

(Forest City, NC) -- A Forest City man is accused of abusing his infant son. The nearly-month-old boy was treated for a skull fracture and broken ribs last month at both Mission Hospital and Rutherford Regional Hospital. Tyresse Cox allegedly told Forest City police that he threw and kicked the baby because he kept crying. He's still in jail on a count of felony child abuse.

Duke Investigated For Trout Deaths

(Bryson City, NC) -- Duke Energy is under investigation in connected to the death of trout on the Nantahala River. The company opened the spillway gates to the dam on the river near the end of July. It typically allows much warmer water to flow into the river, which is better for recreational purposes. As many as 150 fish died as a result.

Mission Hospital Project Complete

(Asheville, NC) -- A large project at Mission Hospital is complete. Hospital officials held the grand opening of the North Tower yesterday. It was a 400-million-dollar project that will provide a new emergency room. Mission's CEO says it's state-of-the-art and there's nothing else like it in 2019.

CMPD Investigating Homicide

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating the city's 77th homicide of the year. Officers found a woman suffering from traumatic injuries at a home on Fagan Way yesterday. Investigators say the victim and a woman had an argument before the shooting. Witnesses say they heard several gunshots.

Student Hit By Car

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte high school teen is in the hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car. The 16-year-old was reportedly hit while walking over a crosswalk on Castaway Drive near Garinger High School yesterday. The CMPD says the driver had a green light at the time of the accident. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries.

Couple Arrested On Child Sex Crimes

(Chester, SC) -- A man and woman are facing sex crimes against nine children in Chester. Bradley Corley, Senior and Sarah Lacy are in jail without bond for criminal sexual conduct with a minor. All of the children involved are between two- and eleven-years-old. The total number of charges filed in the case has topped out over 100.

(Rock Hill, SC) -- A Democratic presidential candidate is campaigning in Rock Hill today. Bernie Sanders is holding a rally at the outdoor amphitheater of Winthrop University at 6 p.m. Doors open at five for the free event. Sanders is considered one of the top three Democratic candidates.

(Charlotte, NC) -- Panthers' head coach Ron Rivera still isn't naming a starter for Sunday's game at Arizona. Cam Newton missed practice against yesterday, almost a full week after he re-aggravated a mid-foot sprain against Tampa Bay. Backup Kyle Allen is slated to step in if Cam has to sit the game out. Crews Working To Clear Water After Main Break On Busy Raleigh Roadway

(Raleigh, NC) -- City crews are working to fix a broken water main that had water flowing across a major Raleigh roadway. The main near Glenwood Avenue and Brier Creek Parkway broke a little before 10 p.m. Traffic has been slowed since then and there was no word late last night how long it would take to fix the main and clear water from the roadway.

Raleigh Police Investigating Deadly Car Pedestrian Accident

(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh police are investigating an accident that killed a pedestrian. It happened around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Litchford and Falls of Neuse roads. The person who was hit by a car died at the scene.

2nd Man Arrested In Fayetteville State Shooting

(Fayetteville, NC) -- A second Raleigh man is in custody in connection with Monday's shooting on the Fayetteville State University campus. Eighteen-year-old Rayshawn Vredenburg was arrested in Asheboro and is facing charges that include attempted first degree murder. Twenty-four-year-old Codondrea Purdie was arrested earlier this week.

BCBS CEO Keeps Job After DWI Charges

(Asheboro, NC) -- The president and CEO of BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina will keep his job after his arrest on DWI and child abuse charges. Patrick Conway was arrested after crashing his vehicle on I-85 near Greensboro earlier this summer. Police say he was impaired and his two young daughters were in the vehicle at the time. No one was hurt.

Lawmakers Approve Emergency Funds For Towns That Can Pay Utility Bills

(Raleigh, NC) -- State lawmakers are moving to help small towns struggling to pay their utility bills. They've passed a bill that would free up Department of Environmental Quality funds to the towns of Eureka and Cliffside to pay their sewer bills. Wayne County Republican Representative John Bell said the towns are among 15 to 20 others across the state that are close to dissolving because dying businesses and shrinking populations have left them unable to pay for crumbling utilities.

Asheboro Businesses Evacuated Due To Gas Leak

(Asheboro, NC) -- No injuries are reported after a gas leak in downtown Asheboro. It happened yesterday afternoon in the area of Worth and Fayetteville streets. Several local businesses had to be evacuated because the fire department said the concrete was buckling. Mayor David Smith said he hoped the affected streets would reopen sometime this morning.

Guilford Co. Employees To Receive Pay Increase

(Greensboro, NC) -- The Guilford County Board of Commissioners is moving forward with its plan to give nearly 15-hundred county employees a pay increase. The board agreed yesterday to spend an extra two-point-five-million dollars per year on the salary hikes. The money had already been set aside when the budget was passed in June. The change takes effect this year.
