A brace from Space Wheels broke loose while passengers were on the ride. Fair officials say there were no injuries and that it has now been repaired. It could be operational by this evening.

Governor Cooper said overall it could've been much worse for the state. Power has been restored to all but around two-thousand homes.

WNC State Senator Won't Seek Re-election

(Franklin, NC) -- A western North Carolina state senator is stepping down from politics. District 50 Republican Jim Davis announced yesterday he will not seek re-election in 2020. He's served Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties since 2011 and now plans to spend time with his family. WLOS-TV is reporting State Representative Kevin Corbin will run for the seat.

Boil Water Advisory Lifted In Marshall

(Marshall, NC) -- A boil water advisory is lifted in a Madison County town. The advisory in Marshall took effect last Thursday when E. coli was discovered in a ground water source. Madison County schools were forced to cancel classes on Friday as a result. Town officials now say the latest tests show no traces of E. Coli contamination.

Suspect Sentenced For Assaulting Disabled Man

(Asheville, NC) -- An Iowa man is heading to prison for assaulting a disabled man in south Asheville. Dash cam video shows 31-year-old Timothy Gates repeatedly punching the victim after a two-car crash last December on Long Shoals Road. District Attorney Todd Williams upgraded the original charge of misdemeanor simple assault to felony assault on a disabled person. WLOS-TV says Gates was sentenced to 20 to 33 months in prison after entering a guilty plea last week.

Development Exec Says Hotel Moratorium Could Last Four Years

(Asheville, NC) -- A development executive says a hotel construction moratorium in Asheville could last up to four years. The Citizen-Times is reporting that's what Margie Bukowski of the company Weavercooke said during a meeting of the Council of Independent Business Owners on Friday. The city council is expected to consider a construction stoppage at a meeting later this month which could halt work on hotels for up to a year. Bukowski says it could take longer because it will take time to get projects going again.

Man Suspected Of Killing Pregnant Woman Arrested

(Charlotte, NC) -- A man who allegedly killed a pregnant woman in Charlotte is in jail. The CMPD had been looking for Edward Garner, Senior for more than three weeks after investigators say he shot Aiesha Summers to death on Perugia Way and abducted his two children. The children were found safe. Summers' unborn baby died as a result of the shooting. Garner was arrested on Friday for murder and murder of an unborn child.

President, Vice President In NC Today

(Fayetteville, NC) -- The president and vice president will be in North Carolina today to make a push for Republican Dan Bishop in the ninth district congressional race. Vice President Mike Pence starts things off with Bishop at Wingate University's Fine Arts Center at one this afternoon for a Get Out the Vote event. President Trump is holding a Keep America Great rally at Fayetteville's Crown Expo Center tonight. Bishop is running against Democrat Dan McCready, Libertarian Jeff Scott and the Green Party's Allen Smith in tomorrow's special election.

Body of Man Found On Lake Norman

(Mooresville, NC) -- The search for a 22-year-old man who drowned in Lake Norman is over. Wildlife officials say the man was with a group of ten people who jumped off a boat to go swimming near the Hager Creek access area in Mooresville on Saturday. Search crews found the man's body late Sunday morning. Investigators say he was wearing a life jacket when he jumped in, but it slipped off at some point.

CMPD Officer Arrested For DWI

(Charlotte, NC) -- A CMPD officer is facing DWI charges. Nicholas Ivy-Brooks was initially pulled over Saturday for running a red light in Pineville, but later charged with driving while impaired. Brooks is still under a one-year probationary period after he was hired last October. The CMPD says it is conducting a separate internal investigation.

Panthers Drop Opener To Rams

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Panthers will have to wait until week two to try for win number-one. The Los Angeles Rams defeated Carolina yesterday at Bank of America Stadium 30-to-27. Cam Newton passed for 239 yards and threw one interception in the opener, while Christian McCaffrey ran for nearly 130 yards in the loss. It's a quick turnaround for Carolina, which hosts Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

The President will campaign for Republican congressional candidates in Tuesday's special elections for the 3rd and 9th congressional districts. Wake County Sheriff's Office Investigating Stabbing Sends 4 To Hospital

(Raleigh, NC) -- Wake County Sheriff's deputies are looking for the person who stabbed four people late Sunday night in southeast Raleigh. All four people were rushed to WakeMed. The sheriff's office says the stabbings happened on Gamble Drive near the Neuse River. There's no word on the condition of the victims or whether they knew the person who stabbed them.

Durham Church Challenges Others To Support HBCUs

(Durham, NC) -- A Durham church is challenging other congregations to join in supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities. St. Joseph AME is making a commitment to HBCUs, including a fundraiser in collaboration with North Carolina Central University. The NCCU choir joined the St. Joseph's choir Sunday in a service that included the presentation of a check from St. Joseph's to NCCU.

Big Weekend For UNC, NC State, Duke

NC Governor Confirms Second Death From Hurricane Dorian

(Raleigh, NC) -- We're getting an idea of how much destruction Hurricane Dorian caused across the Carolinas. Governor Roy Cooper says two people died in North Carolina as a result of the storm, which is considered one of the strongest in recorded history. Hundreds of people were trapped in the state's Outer Banks. Cooper says strong winds caused over 20 tornadoes in the Carolinas, and many areas are reporting record-breaking flooding. Search and rescue teams spent the weekend going door-to-door to ensure everyone was accounted for and safe.

Soldier Killed In Afghanistan Car Bomb Identified

(Washington, DC) -- The soldier killed in Afghanistan last Thursday was based in Fort Bragg. The Department of Defense says Sergeant 1st Class Elis Barreto Ortiz died when a car bomb went off near the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul. The 34-year-old was from Puerto Rico and assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg. More than a dozen U.S. service members have been killed in Afghanistan this year.

Couple Found Dead In King

(King, NC) -- Police in King believe a couple died this past weekend as a result of a murder-suicide. The couple in their 60s was found dead at a home on Pineview Drive Friday evening. Police are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the crime. It's not clear who fired the deadly shots.

Davidson Co. Student Accused Of Posting Threat Online

(Davidson Co., NC) -- A Davidson County high school student is accused of posting a threat online. The student, who attends Central Davidson High School, posted the threat on social media Saturday evening. The principal contacted law enforcement, and officers responded to the student's home. He said "swift and appropriate" actions were taken. The superintendent later said the student could face criminal charges.
