Police Say Man May Have Been Set On Fire In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- One man who may have been set on fire in Asheville is in the hospital in critical condition. Police found a man suffering from severe burns early Sunday morning on Tunnel Road in east Asheville. An investigator told WLOS-TV that they're trying to figure out exactly what happened, but it appears someone poured an accelerant on the man. He was flown to the Wake Forest Baptist Health Burn Center in Winston-Salem.

Nursing Home Aide Charged For Assaulting Disabled Patients

(Buncombe County, NC) -- A nursing home aide is being investigated for allegedly abusing disabled patients in Buncombe County. A 34-year-old woman was charged with three misdemeanor counts of assaulting individuals with disabilities. The alleged assaults were reported by StoneCreek Health & Rehabilitation on Victoria Road. The Citizen-Times obtained arrest records that accuse the woman of pinching and striking patients in the face.

Smoke Still Coming From Warehouse Fire Site

(Marion, NC) -- Some smoke is still coming from the site of a large warehouse fire in McDowell County. Fire tore through the 300-thousand-square foot Chamad Warehouse early last Wednesday morning, and the hot spots are still not completely out. Investigators told WLOS-TV that smoke could still appear at the site for the next few days. Some trouble spots in the warehouse that cannot be safely reached will be allowed to burn out.

Suspect Arrested For Truck Explosion

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is facing charges in connection to a June truck explosion. Firefighters found a 2012 Dodge Ram on fire in a residential area on Beaucatcher Mountain, which injured one person close by. The Citizen-Times reports that Scott Ford was arrested for felony malicious use of explosives to damage property and felony burning personal property. He's since been released from jail on bond.

Hendersonville Police Seek Shooting Suspect

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Hendersonville police are looking for a suspect accused in a shooting last Friday. Officers say an 18-year-old was shot in the leg at Woodcock Drive and Robinson Terrace over some drug-related activity. A lookout has been placed for 20-year-old Trayvon Downs. He is facing charges of armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Two Small Earthquakes Reported Around WNC

(Undated) -- Two earthquakes centered in or around western North Carolina are being confirmed from last weekend. The United States Geological Survey says a two-point-five magnitude earthquake originated in the Mars Hill and Weaverville area on Sunday afternoon. This followed up an earthquake with slightly less magnitude that hit north of Greenville, South Carolina earlier in the morning. Earthquakes of such a low magnitude usually don't cause much impact on the surface.

Union County Man Arrested For Killing Daughter

(Union County, NC) -- A man who turned himself in for a homicide in Union County is accused of killing his daughter. Joshua Burgess showed up to the sheriff's office on Sunday morning to say he had killed someone who visited him at his Hampton Meadows neighborhood home. Investigators revealed yesterday that the victim is Burgess' daughter, identified as 15-year-old Zaria Burgess. She was found inside the home after Burgess' reported confession. The cause of death hasn't been released yet.

Suspect Flees After CVS Armed Robbery

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for a suspect who held up a CVS last night. Investigators say he fired a shot while inside the Kendall Drive store a little before eight. No one was injured, but there were several customers in the store at the time. A K-9 unit wasn't able to track down the suspect, who ran away from the store on foot.

Early Voting For Congressional Race Begins Tomorrow

(Charlotte, NC) -- Early voting begins tomorrow in the ninth district congressional race. Voters from southeast Charlotte to Bladen County will decide a seat that's been up in the air since last fall's election results were thrown out due to ballot fraud. On the ballot are Democrat Dan McCready, Republican Dan Bishop, Libertarian Jeff Scott and Green Party candidate Allen Smith. Early voters can also cast ballots for several Charlotte city council seats and the mayor's race.

Panthers Practice In Bubble For First Time

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Panthers can now get some much-needed relief from the heat at practice. Monday marked the first time the team was able to run through drills inside their new practice bubble in preparations for the 2019 season. The field is about 60 yards in length. Tight end Greg Olsen said the 30-degree difference was a nice relief from being outside. The bubble is a temporary fix as the Panthers work on construction of a new team headquarters in Rock Hill.

CMPD Seeking Man With Almost 20 Arrests

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police want the public's help in finding a man with a large criminal history. Officers are looking for Demarcus Mack in connection to an armed robbery charge. He's been arrested in Mecklenburg County nearly 20 times for charges ranging from assault to armed robbery. His last arrest was in May for possession of a stolen firearm.

Queens University Changing Admissions Process

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte school won't be weighing standardized tests as much for the 2020 school year. NBC Charlotte reports that Queens University is changing its admissions process to drop requirements for SAT and ACT scores, while instead focusing on the student as a whole. Wake Forest University made standardized testing reports optional more than a decade ago.

Durham Teen Killed As City Leaders Denounce 9-Year Old's Weekend Shooting

(Durham, NC) -- People in Durham are shaken after a teenager was shot and killed as city leaders were denouncing the killing of a nine-year-old over the weekend. An 18-year-old man was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound a little after 8 p.m. Monday. As police investigated the shooting, Durham City Council members and Mayor Steve Schewel were discussing Sunday night's killing of Zion Person. The boy was with his aunt and four other children when someone in a burgundy Honda Accord with tinted windows fired shots into their car.

Chatham County Commissioners: Confederate Statue Outside Courthouse Must Move

(Pittsboro, NC) -- The Chatham County Board of Commissioners say a Confederate monument outside the county courthouse needs to be moved. The commissioners voted 4-1 Monday to give the United Daughters of the Confederacy until October 1st to come up with a plan for the statue. The commissioners said if nothing's done by November 1st, the county will make plans to remove it. The Daughters of the Confederacy donated the statue to the county in 1907 and current leaders of the group say it's now county property and can't be moved under a four-year-old state law governing public monuments.

Durham Woman Charged In Hit & Run That Seriously Injured Teen Girl

(Fuquay-Varina, NC) -- A Durham woman is charged with felony hit-and-run after a teenager on a moped was run down Friday night in Fuquay-Varina. Thirty-nine-year-old Serita Monique Davis was arrested and jailed Monday evening. Police say Davis was driving an SUV that hit 16-year-old Isabella Allen. The girl is in serious condition at WakeMed.

UNC-Chapel Hill Hires New Police Chief

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- UNC-Chapel Hill has a new police chief. The university announced Monday it's hired current Florida State University chief David Perry. Perry will become UNC's first black chief on September 3rd when he succeeds Jeff McCracken who retired in July after 30 years. UNC said in a statement that Perry embraced community policing and building relationships between campus police and the community during his 14 years as chief at FSU.

UNC Approves Alcohol Sales At Football Games

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- The bar is open at Kenan Stadium. UNC-Chapel Hill announced Monday it has approved alcohol sales at football games this season. Beer and wine will be on sale when the Tar Heels open their home season against Miami on September 7th. UNC joins NC State and six other universities in allowing alcohol sales during sporting events on campus.

Storms Cause Path Of Destruction Across Triad

(Undated) -- There is widespread damage in Greensboro and other parts of the Triad after storms moved through the area yesterday. The storms uprooted trees, flooded streets and knocked out power to about three-thousand Duke Energy customers in Guilford and Forsyth counties. The Triad is bracing for even more severe weather; according to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are in the forecast through the end of the week.

Winston-Salem Votes To Change Name Of Dixie Classic Fair

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The City of Winston-Salem is moving forward with plans to change the name of the Dixie Classic Fair. The City Council voted in favor yesterday of the name change. A new one has not been chosen yet.

Couple Arrested In Davidson Co. Kidnapping

(Davidson Co., NC) -- Police are announcing two more arrests in connection with a kidnapping in High Point last week. Lisa Meade and her boyfriend, Gregory Nill, were charged Friday with accessory after the fact. They're accused of helping Michael Enochs hide inside a treehouse, according to arrest warrants. Police say Enochs stole a vehicle with a young boy in the backseat one week ago. The boy was later found safe and Enochs was arrested.

Haw River Man Turns Himself In After Standoff With Police

(Alamance Co., NC) -- A Haw River man is accused of firing shots at officers who responded to a noise complaint. The scene played out just after 2 a.m. yesterday, near Thompson and Norma streets. Dustin Eller is accused of shooting at officers and then escaping out of the back door. Warrants were issued for assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearms by a felon. Eller turned himself into the Alamance County Sheriff's office yesterday evening.

Hundreds Of 'No Glass In Recycling' Warnings Issued

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro residents are reminded not to put glass in their recycling bins. A new law went into effect in July, banning folks from recycling glass in their curbside bins. Since then, waste reduction officials say about a thousand notices have been issued. The city has six glass recycling drop-off locations throughout the city.
