Asheville Break-In Suspect Caught Red-Handed

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police say a suspect accused in a string of break-ins was caught in the act on Saturday night. Officers arrested William Henson the Third after he set off an alarm trying to break into Biltmore Iron and Metal on Meadow Road. They say he's broken into several businesses along Amboy Road and Depot Street. Henson is facing at least nine charges ranging from felony breaking and entering to damage to real property.

A-B Tech Leaders Trying To Make Up Budget Shortfall

(Asheville, NC) -- Administrators at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College are trying to handle a half-million-dollar budget deficit. The Citizen-Times is reporting that county commissioners will consider adding 300-thousand-additional-dollars to the college's funding at the board's meeting tomorrow. College President Dennis King says cutting out an overnight police shift would help cut back on the deficit. Buncombe's commissioners previously approved nearly seven-million-dollars for A-B Tech in June.

Two Teens Wanted For Armed Robbery

(Henderson County, NC) -- Henderson County investigators are looking for two teens accused of armed robbery. A lookout has been placed for 18-year-olds Nigel Smith and Nazareth Bryant. The sheriff's office says there are multiple felony warrants pending for the pair in connection to an armed robbery on August 12th. They may be staying in the Hill Crest area of Asheville or 7th Avenue in Hendersonville.

Murder Trial Of Alex Crisp Continues In Swain County

(Swain County, NC) -- The Swain County murder trial of Alex Crisp is continuing this week. Testimony began last week in the case of Crisp, who is accused of shooting his girlfriend to death in 2014 at a home they shared in Bryson City. The defense claims that the girlfriend's death was an accidental or intentional suicide. More witnesses are expected to take the stand today.

Person Hit By Train In Marion

(Marion, NC) -- Marion police are investigating an accident after one pedestrian was hit by a train. McDowell County Emergency Services officials told WLOS-TV that a person was reportedly laying on the tracks when a Norfolk Southern train came through on Friday night around Carolina Avenue. The person was taken to Asheville's Mission Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Real Estate Firm Buys Large Biltmore Village Apartment Community

(Asheville, NC) -- A large apartment community in Asheville's Biltmore Village is under new ownership. The Citizen-Times is reporting the Chicago-based real estate firm GEM Realty Capital purchased The District for just under 72-million-dollars this month. The community was built in 2017 just off Fairview Road and includes over 300 apartment units with amenities. The purchase price averaged out to around 230-thousand-dollars-per-unit.

One Dead, One Injured In Kings Mountain Shooting

(Kings Mountain, NC) -- Police in Kings Mountain are investigating a deadly shooting. One person died and one was injured after gunfire erupted at the Summerfield West Apartments on West Kings Street Sunday afternoon. Neighbors told WSOC-TV that they heard close to 20 gunshots. Investigators haven't released any information on a possible suspect.

Union County Man Turns Himself In For Murder

(Union County, NC) -- A man is in jail for a suspected murder in Union County. The sheriff's office says Joshua Burgess turned himself in Sunday morning. He allegedly told investigators that he killed someone that was visiting him over the weekend. They found the victim's body inside Burgess' home on Goldmine Road in Wesley Chapel. There's no word on how the victim may have died. Burgess was booked on a charge of murder.

Organizers Hold Charlotte Day To Call For Decrease In Violence

(Charlotte, NC) -- A community group is making an effort to cut down on violence in Charlotte. The United Neighborhoods of Charlotte held an event called Charlotte Day at Freedom Park on Sunday. It included a school supply drive, ten-mile charity ride and a community get-together. Also, a reported 200-thousand-people attended the two-day festival called Charlotte Pride in uptown over the weekend. Mayor Vi Lyles said she was proud to be a mayor of a city that celebrates inclusivity and knows love is love.

Two Injured In NW Charlotte Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a shooting that injured two people in northwest Charlotte Saturday night. Officers say someone opened fire in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Griers Grove Road. Bullets hit two apartments and four cars, in addition to the two victims. They are both expected to recover from their injuries.

Tree Topples Onto Three Mobile Homes

(Charlotte, NC) -- Severe storms are causing problems for three families in Charlotte. A tree fell onto several mobile homes on Victoria Avenue near West W.T. Harris Boulevard on Saturday night, which injured one person. One of the homes was reportedly destroyed by the tree. Another tree smashed some cars on Eastfield Road in north Charlotte as the storms came through.

Carvana Looking At Old Philip Morris Site

(Concord, NC) -- An online used car retailer is eying the old Philip Morris site in Concord for a new location. The Charlotte Observer is reporting Carvana wants to pour 35-million-dollars into renovating a building at the site to outfit cars that will go to customers. The move would create more than 300 jobs. The Cabarrus County board of commissioners will take comments from the public at its meeting tonight.

Lt. Gov. Forest Launches Campaign For Governor

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest's long-expected campaign for governor is officially underway. Forest launched his campaign Saturday with a rally in Winston-Salem. Forest said he wants to create a new vision for North Carolina, with a stronger stand against abortion and rejection of socialism. Forest joins State Representative Holly Grange of Wilmington in the race for the Republican nomination to challenge Governor Roy Cooper.

Architect Who Helped Revitalize Downtown Raleigh, Steve Schuster, Dies

(Raleigh, NC) -- Steve Schuster, the architect who helped bring downtown Raleigh back to life, has died. The 68-year-old Schuster died Saturday after a three-year battle with cancer. The News & Observer reports Schuster and his business partner, artist Thomas Sayre, began their campaign to revitalize downtown 30 years ago when they and their wives moved into apartments they created from an old plumbing supply warehouse. Sayre says the best way to appreciate Schuster's work and legacy is to walk around downtown Raleigh and dozens of small North Carolina towns where he turned old and often decrepit historic buildings into modern spaces that transformed neighborhoods and towns.

Cary Officials Blame Water Outage On Broken Main

(Cary, NC) -- Officials in Cary say a break in a water main is the reason the water stopped running for more than five hours on Sunday. A town spokesperson told WRAL an eight-inch main broke around 8:30 a.m. because of wear and tear on a pipe. That cut off water to four commercial customers, including the Church of God on Quade Drive, which canceled services. The town says no homes lost water service.

Weekend Crashes Close I-40/55 In Both Directions

(Mebane, NC) -- One person is being treated for serious injuries after chain-reaction crashes shut down Interstate-40/85 in both directions Saturday evening. The first wreck happened in the westbound lanes a little after 6 p.m. and the second was in the eastbound lanes a short time later. The Interstate was closed in both directions for more than two hours. The State Highway Patrol suspects heavy rain was most likely to blame for the chain-reaction wrecks.

One Person Killed In Multi-Car Wreck

(Monroe, NC) -- One person is dead after a multi-car wreck in Monroe. Five vehicles were involved in the crash yesterday afternoon on Highway 74 at Stafford Street. No other injuries were reported. It's not clear what vehicle caused the wreck or whether any charges will be filed.

Greensboro PD Mourns Loss Of K9

(Greensboro, NC) -- The Greensboro Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its K-9 officers. Police say Rambo was killed Friday evening in the line of duty. They say he was chasing a robbery suspect when he was hit by a car. Rambo had been with the department for nearly five years.

Feds Investigate Earnhardt Plane Crash

(Elizabethton, TN) -- Federal officials are investigating the Tennessee plane crash involving famed NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., his wife and their young daughter. During a news briefing over the weekend, the NTSB said the Earnhardts and two pilots escaped from the eleven-seat plane as it caught fire Thursday. The flight originated in North Carolina. The NTSB said the plane bounced at least twice in the landing and came down "hard on the right main landing gear," which appeared to collapse.

No Serious Injuries After Tractor-Trailer Overturns

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- No one is seriously hurt after a tractor-trailer overturned in Winston-Salem. It happened yesterday afternoon on U.S. 311 northbound to I-40. The driver of the big-rig suffered minor injuries. There's no word on what caused the wreck.

Burlington Police Need Help Finding Missing Woman

(Burlington, NC) -- Burlington police are looking for a woman who hasn't been seen since June. Forty-five-year-old Patricia Macchia is described as white, about five-feet, seven-inches tall and 175 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. Foul play is not suspected at this time. Anyone with information on Macchia's whereabouts is urged to call Burlington PD.
