Suspect Accused Of Threatening WNC Hikers Arrested For Virginia Murder

(Wythe County, VA) -- A man accused of threatening hikers in Western North Carolina three weeks ago is now charged with a murder on the Appalachain Trail. The U.S. Department of Justice says 30-year-old James Jordan attacked a man and woman who were hiking along the trail early Saturday morning in Wythe County, Virginia. The man died from his injuries and the female victim is expected to survive after she walked several miles to find other hikers to call for help. Jordan was previously arrested after making threats to hikers in Madison County.

Mother Charged In Attempted Murder Of Baby

(Henderson County, NC) -- An Asheville woman is accused in the attempted murder of her baby who was thought to have been kidnapped from Biltmore Park. Investigators believe Krista Madden faked the whole thing when reports of her kidnapped seven-week-old baby came in on Thursday. The child was found down a 30-foot ravine in Henderson County, but is said to be doing okay. Madden was arrested for first-degree attempted murder and is set to appear in court on May 28th.

UNCC Students Receive Degrees In Memoriam

(Charlotte, NC) -- The two students killed in a shooting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte last month have received degrees in memoriam during the school's commencement ceremonies. The families of Waynesville's Riley Howell and Reed Parlier both accepted the degrees for their sons on Saturday. Survivor Emily Houpt received her degree as well. The spring commencement comes after a gunman opened fire in a classroom on the campus April 30th, killing Howell and Parlier and injuring Houpt and three others.

Bernie Visiting Asheville For Rally

(Asheville, NC) -- A Democratic presidential candidate is making a trip to Asheville this week. Bernie Sanders is slated to appear at a rally at Salvage Station on Riverside Drive Friday at noon. The event is free. Attendees are encouraged to bike, walk or take a ride-share service as parking is limited.

Two Men Charged With Attempted Murder In Swain County

(Swain County, NC) -- Two men are facing attempted murder charges in Swain County. The sheriff's office says the two men were arrested Friday for an assault in the Galbraith Creek community. They were both being held on a one-million-dollar bond. Investigators haven't revealed exactly what happened.

Asheville Airport To Add Parking Lot

(Asheville, NC) -- Parking is expanding at the Asheville Regional Airport. WLOS-TV is reporting that a new parking lot will be open across from the existing lot by this fall. There should be enough space for 400 cars. The move is being made in response to a fifth consecutive year of record growth at the airport.

Slain Savannah Officer Is Charlotte Native

(Savannah, GA) -- A Savannah police officer who was killed Saturday night while responding to a robbery is a Charlotte native. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Sergeant Kelvin Ansari was shot by the suspect on Bull Street outside of downtown. The suspect died after being shot by an officer in the backyard of a home close by. Ansari was raised in Charlotte and went on to serve 21 years in the Army before joining the Savannah Police Department.

Man Accused Of Killing Family Members In Court Today

(Gaston County, NC) -- A man accused of running over and killing two of his family members nearly a year ago at a Gaston County restaurant is scheduled to appear in court today. Roger Self allegedly drove his SUV into the Surf and Turf Lodge last May. His daughter and daughter-in-law died in the crash. The Gaston Gazette is reporting that he'll be served grand jury indictments today.

Belmont Police Looking For Murder Suspect

(Belmont, NC) -- Belmont police are looking for a man accused of murder. The body of Delia Rick was found inside a car in Lake Wylie at the Seven Oaks Bridge just over a week ago. James Michael Rick has now been charged in her death. Investigators believe he may be in the Myrtle Beach area.

CMPD Seeks Suspect Who Shot Cars On I-85

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for someone who opened fire on I-85 near Beatties Ford Road yesterday. One man says he was followed onto the interstate by the suspect after a confrontation at a gas station. Bullets hit the man's car and another vehicle heading northbound. A window was shattered, but there were no injuries.

Republican Primary For Ninth District Is Tomorrow

(Charlotte, NC) -- Voters are heading to the polls tomorrow for the ninth district Republican primary. The ballot features ten candidates for the GOP who are hoping to face off against Democrat Dan McCready in the September 10th general election. That date will be pushed back if there is a runoff in the Republican primary. The congressional district runs from southeastern Mecklenburg County to Cumberland and Bladen counties.

Raleigh Airline Pilot Accused Of Killing Three

(Christian Co., KY) -- An airplane pilot from Raleigh is accused of shooting three people in Kentucky. Fifty-one-year-old Christian Martin flies for an American Airlines subsidiary, but on Saturday he was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky. He's charged with the 2015 murders of Edward Dansereau, and Calvin and Pamela Phillips. Kentucky investigators say Calvin Phillips was found shot dead in a home, while both Pamela and Dansereau were found dead in her burnt up car. Martin is a former Army special forces officer. He was arrested on a plane in uniform.

Bruins Win Game Two Against The Canes

(Boston, MA) -- The Bruins are pulling away from the Canes in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Last night, the Bruins trounced Carolina 6-2 in Boston. The Canes are set to go into game three up 2-0 in the series. The Bruins play game the Hurricanes in Raleigh tomorrow night.

State Senator's Farm Fire Causes A Million Dollars In Damage

(Sampson Co., NC) -- A fire in Sampson County may have caused a million-dollars in damages. Yesterday morning, about 70 firefighters rushed to a farm in Autryville about a massive fire. The farm is owned by North Carolina State Senator Brent Jackson, and he the fire hit his farm's maintenance building. Senator Jackson says they mostly lost farm equipment like tractors, trailers and forklifts. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Man Police Say Hit A Deputy And Someone Else With A Car Is Due In Court Today

(Wayne Co., NC) -- A man police say hit a Wayne County deputy and another man with a car is due in court today. Deputies say on Saturday, 23-year-old Di'Twan Davis was asked to leave a nightclub after a dispute, but before he left, he grabbed a gun from his car and shot off a couple shots. Goldsboro police say he took off in the car hitting a deputy and a 24-year-old man. Davis crashed at an intersection and was taken to the hospital. The deputy hit is expected to recover, but the civilian hit was airlifted to the hospital and is in critical condition. Davis is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and possession of a stolen firearm by a convicted felon. He's being held on 110-thousand-dollars bond.

Three People Involved In A 5 Car High Speed Crash Injured

(Wilson, NC) -- Three people are injured after a high speed chase ended in Wilson. Troopers say they were chasing a Ford Escape last night when it ran a red light on Raleigh Road Parkway. Police say it caused a crash that damaged five vehicles. Two people inside the Ford Escape were taken to the hospital. One woman in one of the other cars was also taken to the hospital. It isn't known why police were chasing the Ford in the first place, and no charges have been announced.

Raleigh Triple Shooting

(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh police are investigating a triple shooting. They say three people were shot last night on the four-thousand-block of Old Coach Road. All three victims were taken to the hospital, but it looks like they're all going to survive. Police haven't identified any of the victims yet, and they haven't released any more details about the shooting.

Funnel Cloud Spotted In Surry Co.

(Surry Co., NC) -- There are no reports of any damage after a funnel cloud was spotted in Surry County. It was seen yesterday evening at Tom Jones and Moser roads, but it's not clear if it touched down. Tornado warnings were issued for both Surry and Stokes counties at the time, but they've since expired.

One Person Killed, Two Hurt In Greensboro Shooting

(Greensboro, NC) -- One person is dead and two others are hurt after a shooting in Greensboro. It happened early yesterday morning at the Mill Entertainment Complex on South Elm Street. Twenty-two-year-old Tre'vis Hawkins was killed and two other people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police are looking for a green Dodge Challenger in connection with the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Toddler Shot After Two Children Find Handgun In Lincolnton

(Lincolnton, NC) -- A one-year-old is badly hurt after a shooting in Lincolnton. The incident happened just before noon yesterday after the child and a three-year-old sibling found a gun in their parents' nightstand. Police say the bullet grazed the one-year-old's head. The child was rushed to a hospital in Charlotte. It's not clear yet whether the parents will face charges.

Man Killed In Hit-And-Run Wreck In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run wreck involving a moped. It happened early Saturday morning near Ogburn Avenue and McCreary Street. Thirty-four-year-old Bobby Forrester was killed when a car hit his motorized scooter. Police found the suspect's car, a Mercedes 550, but no one was in it.

Dave & Busters To Open In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Dave & Busters opens today in Winston-Salem. It's an arcade-style venue with a restaurant and sports bar. Dave & Busters is located at Hanes Mall, next to what used to be Sears. It will employ just over 230 people.
