One Person Shot In Brevard

(Brevard, NC) -- Brevard Police are investigating an overnight shooting. Officers say the victim was alert when they arrived at the scene on Oakdale street around midnight. A suspect is now in custody. The victim is at Mission Hospital.

Highest-Ever Winds Recorded At Grandfather Mountain

(Linville, NC) -- Park officials at Grandfather Mountain are reporting record high winds. A three-second gust that registered at over 121-miles-an-hour early Wednesday morning broke the previous record set in 2012. Sustained winds of over 86 miles-an-hour were recorded around the same time. The president of the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation told WLOS-TV that the park didn't sustain any damage.

Man Dies In Wreck With Catawba Deputy

(Hickory, NC) -- State troopers say one man died in a wreck with a Catawba County sheriff's deputy early Wednesday morning. Their vehicles crashed at the intersection of 12th Avenue Drive and McDonald Parkway just outside of Hickory. A Hickory man died at the scene, while the deputy was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries. Details on the cause of the accident haven't been released.

Residents Speak For And Against Proposed Asphalt Plant

(Madison County, NC) -- Residents in Madison County are at odds over a proposed asphalt plant. Several hundred people crowded the board of commissioners meeting last night to voice their opinions. Opponents cite possible air quality concerns and lowered property values if the plant moves forward. A crowd of employees and family members from French Broad Paving wore bright yellow shirts in support of their company's project. It's now awaiting a go-ahead from the zoning board.

RV Swept Away By Flood Reportedly Found Miles Away

(Marshall, NC) -- What's left of an RV that was swept away in the French Broad River in late December may be seven miles downstream near Marshall. It was December 28th when a camper owned by Derek Velthuis shot down the river in raging floodwaters. A French Broad Waterkeeper now says it appears debris from the camper settled about three miles outside of Marshall. Velthuis told WLOS-TV that it looks like all that is left are the wheels and a sink.

DuPont Forest Grows By 400 Acres

(Transylvania County, NC) -- The DuPont State Recreational Forest is still growing. The non-profit organization Conserving Carolina said this week that 400 acres were added to the forest in Transylvania County. The addition is expected to connect the forest to conserved lands along the South Carolina border. Close to 800 acres near Cascade Lake was announced as an addition to the recreational area in January.

Baby Dies From Injuries In Early January Fire

(Charlotte, NC) -- A baby injured in an east Charlotte fire last month is dead. Four-month-old Axel Camilo was with the rest of his family when flames spread through a home on Academy Street near Garinger High on January 2nd. His mother and two siblings died from their injuries within days of the fire. Camilo had been cared for at a burn center until he died this week.

Police: Woman Sexually Assaulted, Stabbed Outside Apartments

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-Meck Police are looking for a suspect accused of a violent sexual assault last night. The victim told officers that she was assaulted by a man in the parking lot of the Courtney Ridge Apartments off Billy Graham Parkway. The suspect reportedly stabbed her when she tried fighting back. The woman was taken to the hospital for injuries.

Gaston County Man Charged Almost Two-Thousand-Dollars For Pizza

(Gaston County, NC) -- A Gaston County man says he was charged close to two-thousand-dollars for a pizza from a local Domino's last week. He told WSOC-TV that the 18-dollar-total showed up correctly on his receipt, but what came out of his bank account was a lot more. Franchise owner Mark Patterson says a computer glitch by a third-party processor caused problems for 25-hundred customers nationwide last Friday. The customer was charged more when a couple of extra zeros were added on to the price, but the company has since refunded the money.

Charlotte Anticipating Busy NBA Weekend

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Queen City is preparing for up to 150-thousand visitors during the NBA's All-Star weekend. CMPD Lieutenant Brad Koch says officers will be strategically placed around Charlotte to handle the unexpected. Roads around uptown are expected to be clogged beginning Friday in anticipation of official NBA events and parties. The city of Charlotte is banning backpacks and purses from LYNX trains and station platforms from five Friday afternoon through Sunday.

Man Dies In Single-Car Wreck

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a deadly wreck in southwest Charlotte. Officers said a car ran off Four Horse Road near the McDowell Nature Preserve on Wednesday night. One man died at the scene. There were no other cars involved.

NBA's Paul Teams With Charity To Help Charlotte Kids

(Charlotte, NC) -- Hundreds of elementary school kids have new shoes thanks to the help of an NBA star. NBC Charlotte says Chris Paul's family foundation and the charity Shoes That Fit teamed up to give out over 700 pairs of new tennis shoes to students at David Cox Elementary yesterday. His mother says it was the largest shoe giveaway they've done so far. Paul starred at Wake Forest and currently plays for the Houston Rockets.

CA Fugitive Wanted By FBI, Killed In Apex

(Apex, NC) -- One of the FBI's most wanted is dead after an FBI agent shot him in an Apex hotel. Police say they tracked 47-year-old Greg Carlson to the Woodspring Suites on Lufkin Road yesterday. He was wanted for a number of armed sexual assaults in and around the Los Angeles, California area. Apex police notified the FBI who went to arrest Carlson, but an agent shot him in a hotel room. The FBI says he was armed, but didn't give any more details. The shooting is under investigation by the bureau's inspection division.

M.E. Says Hania Aguilar Likely Suffocated, Sexually Assaulted

(Lumberton, NC) -- The medical examiner says 13-year-old Hania Aguilar likely died from suffocation. She was kidnapped from outside her Lumberton home in November and found dead after more than three weeks. The autopsy report that came out yesterday said the teen was probably suffocated and sexually assaulted. Thirty-four-year-old Michael Ray McLellan was arrested and is facing murder charges. He was also charged with a rape from 2016 after his DNA was found in an old rape kit.

Sixteen Apartments Destroyed By Fire

(Raleigh, NC) -- A fire that destroyed 16 units at a Raleigh apartment complex is being called an accident. Firefighters say the blaze broke out yesterday afternoon at the Enclave at Crossroads Apartments off Crossroads Arbor Way. Most of the building's roof is completely gone, but firefighters helped rescue all the pets in harm's way. Everyone inside the building was able to make it out safely and no injuries were reported.

UNC Chapel Hill Tree Fire Starter Found Not Guilty By Insanity

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- The man accused of setting fire to a historic tree at UNC Chapel Hill isn't going to prison. Prosecutors say Joshua Edwards used an explosive device to set fire to the Davie Poplar tree in 2017. The tree wasn't destroyed, but a professor who tried to put out the fire suffered burns to the face and arms. Edwards was found not guilty by reason of insanity yesterday. His lawyers say he has psychosis. Edwards was committed to a facility for the mentally ill, and he'll stay there until a judge determines that he's no longer a danger.

Police Search For Service Rifle Stolen Out Of Locked Patrol Vehicle

(Garner, NC) -- Police in Garner are trying to find a stolen police rifle. They say sometime Monday morning or Tuesday night, someone broke the window of a patrol car parked at an off-duty officer's Johnston County home and stole the service rifle from a locked gun rack. Garner police say they're still trying to find out how the thief got past the lock on the gun rack. The Johnston County Sheriff's Department is helping search for the rifle and the thief. Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1.

Police Try To Find Stolen Church Trailer

(Knightdale, NC) -- Knightdale police are trying to find a stolen church trailer. On Tuesday morning, someone made off with The Edge Church Pastor Peter Brown's mobile church trailer, and about 150-thousand-dollars' worth of equipment and supplies inside. A surveillance camera recorded a man pulling his truck up to the trailer parked at the Knightdale Station Preschool, hooking it up and driving off. The white trailer is 24-feet-long with North Carolina plates that end in 7-2-4. It has a sticker on the back that says Portable Church Industries. Anyone who spots it is asked to call police.

Autopsy Released In Murder Of Hania Aguilar

(Robeson Co., NC) -- The 13-year-old Robeson County girl who vanished from the front yard of her mobile home last November likely died of suffocation or strangulation. According to an autopsy released yesterday, Hania Aguilar died of undetermined "homicidal violence," most likely of asphyxia since other causes were ruled out. Her decomposing body was found in a pit of water a few weeks after her disappearance. Michael McLellan faces murder, rape and other charges in connection with Aguilar's death.

Third Suspect Arrested In Shooting That Killed Teen, Unborn Baby

(High Point, NC) -- High Point police are announcing a third arrest in the death of an 18-year-old woman and her unborn baby. Joel Jenkins was arrested this week on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Anastasia Ray was shot in the head in August 2018. Both she and her unborn baby died from their injuries. Hykeem Simmons and Jonas Thompson have already been arrested on first-degree murder charges.

Yadkin Co. Woman Sentenced After Pleading Guilty To Murder

(Yadkin Co., NC) -- A Yadkin County woman is sentenced to life behind bars in the stabbing death of a man in 2016. Mary Ann Waddell pleaded guilty yesterday. She was charged with first-degree murder, burglary, robbery and felony larceny in the death of Jack Wilson Brooks. As part of her plea deal, Waddell must testify against her two co-defendants.

Driver Killed In Crash In Davidson Co.

(Davidson Co., NC) -- A driver is dead after a single-car wreck in Davidson County. It happened yesterday afternoon on Leonard-Berrier Road. Troopers say the car ran off the road, overcorrected and then flipped. The driver has not been identified. An investigation is underway.

Walk-On's Bistreaux and Bar Coming To Triad

(Undated) -- A Baton Rouge-based eatery could be coming to the Triad. Walk-On's Bistreaux and Bar is opening up restaurants in Fayetteville, Wilmington and Ft. Bragg. The chain is also seeking franchisees in the Triad. Walk-On's Bistreaux and Bar offers Poboys, seafood, gumbos and soups, among other things.
