One Dies In Apartment Fire (Asheville, NC)

The SBI is investigating a deadly apartment blaze in Asheville.  WLOS-TV is reporting that more than three dozen firefighters battled flames at a four-unit building on Pritchard Road Sunday morning.  One person was found dead inside.  Another was taken to a burn center in Georgia for injuries.  

Snow Heading To WNC (Asheville, NC)

Snow is heading towards Western North Carolina again.  Most of the area will be under a winter storm watch early Tuesday morning through the evening.  The Asheville area is expected to see around an inch of snow, while areas to the west could get anywhere from two to five inches.  The National Weather Service is calling for the snow to fall in just a few hours before skies turn sunny and temperatures plummet. 

Another Democrat Running For U.S. Senate (Raleigh, NC)

The number of Democratic candidates looking to unseat Republican Senator Thom Tillis is starting to pile up already.  District Three State Senator Erica Smith became the third candidate to announce intentions to run for the seat in 2020.  She joins Trevor Fuller from Mecklenburg County and Eva Lee of Raleigh. Tillis was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014 after serving two terms in the state house.   

Former Brewers Alliance Exec Charged With Embezzlement (Asheville, NC)

A former Asheville Brewers Alliance executive is accused of embezzling from the organization.  Kendra Penland Turner was arrested for fraudulently using a credit card and embezzling an unspecified amount of money.  She faced the charges in Buncombe County court on Friday.  The Asheville Citizen-Times says Turner resigned as executive director of the alliance last summer to go into consulting.  

Armed Robbery Suspect Arrested Running Away From Scene (Asheville, NC)

One suspect is facing charges in a convenience store armed robbery in Asheville.  Investigators said Shamauri Shivers was arrested after allegedly holding up a Hot Spot on Asheland Avenue at gunpoint over the weekend.  He was caught running away close to the scene.  

Middle School Honors Asheville's First Black Firefighter (Asheville, NC)

A middle school is honoring Asheville's first African-American firefighter.  WLOS-TV says a bronze plaque commemorating the service of Bobby Bowens was dedicated at Valley Springs Middle School on Friday morning.  Bowens also served as a bus driver for the school.  The president of the city's firefighters association said Bowens broke many barriers at the Asheville Fire Department. 

Homicide Investigated At Charlotte Gas Station (Charlotte, NC)

The CMPD is investigating a deadly shooting at a gas station.  A man was found dead in the parking lot of a Shell Station on Mallard Creek Road near Concord Mills last night.  There's no word on any information on a suspect.  The homicide marks the city's tenth this month, which doubles the number from last January.  

Suspect Arrested For Friday Night Murder (Charlotte, NC)

A suspect is in jail for allegedly shooting a 63-year-old grandmother to death on Friday night in Charlotte.  Investigators say Harriet Cromartie was caught in the path of gunfire while she was inside a car outside apartments on Wynwood Way.  Nazah James was arrested for murder on Saturday night.  Another woman was shot and is expected to be okay.

At Least 30 Cars Vandalized In Parking Deck (Charlotte, NC)

Investigators are looking for suspects in a string of car break-ins at an uptown parking deck.  The thieves reportedly targeted around 30 cars on West Fifth Street Saturday morning.  The CMPD says about ten-thousand-dollars worth of damage was done.  Cars in both the ungated and gated portions of the deck were damaged.  

Three Dead In Lancaster County Wreck (Indian Land, SC)

State troopers say three people were killed in a wreck on Highway 521 in Lancaster County.  The car reportedly veered off the side of the highway in Indian Land before slamming into a tree early Sunday morning.  Three others were seriously injured.  Investigators haven't said what they think caused the crash.

Deadly Motorcycle Crash Shuts Down Road (Charlotte, NC)

One person is dead in a Sunday night wreck in east Charlotte.  The CMPD shut down several blocks of Central Avenue between Norland Road and Rosehaven Drive during the investigation.  Investigators said the crash involved a motorcycle.  There's no word on what caused the accident or if any other cars were involved.    

Duke Advisor Resigns Under Pressure For An Email Targeting Chinese Speaking Students (Durham, NC)

A Duke advisor is stepping down amid backlash over an email she sent to Chinese-speaking students.  A few days ago, graduate student advisor Megan Neely sent an email to students saying another faculty member was annoyed about students speaking Chinese loudly in student lounges.  The supposed faculty member said they wanted to take their names in case they ever interviewed for an internship or master's project.  Neely suggested these students commit to only speak English, to help them cut down on unintended consequences.  A petition is calling the emails discriminatory, and demands a full investigation.

Deputies Investigate A Toddler Shot In The Head (Wayne Co., NC)

Wayne County deputies are investigating after a toddler was shot in the head.  They say on Saturday a three-year-old child was playing in the parents' room when a loud noise was heard and the toddler was found injured on their bed with a small caliber weapon.  The child was airlifted to a hospital in Greenville for life threatening injuries.  It isn't known how the child is doing, or if charges will be filed.

Police Arrest A Man In Connection With A Double Murder And Arson (Greensboro, NC)

An arrest has been made in a Greensboro double murder and arson.  Police say on Wednesday they found two male bodies burned in an apartment on Summit Avenue.  The fire was intentionally set, and police think 18-year-old Chris Collins set it.  They say he kidnapped one victim and terrorized him before killing him.  It isn't known if there was any connection to the second victim.  Collins is behind bars in Guilford County without bond.

NC Congressman Is In Hospice (Farmville, NC)

Republican Congressman Walter Jones is in hospice care.  The North Carolina GOP made the announcement Friday.  The Representative from Farmville has been on leave for going on two months.  He's served the state's Third Congressional District since 1995 and had said this term will be his last.

More Than $6500 Raised For Raleigh Cop Shot In The Face (Raleigh, NC)

The community is rallying for Raleigh Police Officer Charles Ainsworth who was shot in the line of duty.  He was shot in the face investigating a stolen car earlier this month.  Ainsworth survived and is recovering, but it will be a long recovery.  So far, fundraising efforts have collected at least 65-hundred dollars for Ainsworth.  A number of fundraisers are still accepting donations for him and his family.

Three People Accused Of Robbing Sweepstakes Business Under Arrest (Davidson Co., NC)

Davidson County sheriff's deputies are announcing a pair of arrests after a local sweepstakes business was robbed.  It happened Saturday night at the House Sweepstakes on U.S. Highway 52 in Lexington.  Surveillance footage shows three people going into the business and robbing the place at gunpoint.  Raymond Brown and Tanya Mabe were arrested.  Deputies are still looking for 40-year-old Corey Gaddy and are asking anyone with information to come forward. 

Two People Arrested After Gunshot Fired At Greensboro Mall (Greensboro, NC)

Two people are under arrest after a gunshot was fired at a mall in Greensboro.  The scene unfolded Saturday at the Four Seasons Town Centre.  Police say a group of people got into a fight, and someone opened fire.  Everyone was safely evacuated.  Ivan Smyre and Robert King were taken into custody. 

Man Shot In Chest Outside Asheboro Bar (Asheboro, NC)

A man is recovering after he was shot in the chest outside of a bar in Asheboro.  The victim was struck in the parking lot of Freewayz sports bar on Zoo Parkway early Sunday morning.  He was rushed to Randolph Health and then airlifted to another hospital.  Police have not identified the man or said what led up to the shooting. 

Person Hit By Car In Randolph Co. (Rockingham Co., NC)

 A young woman is in critical condition after she was hit by a car in Rockingham County.  It happened Saturday night along Highway 14, just south of Eden.  Officials say 29-year-old Brittany Cochran was walking near Liveoak Road when she was hit.  The driver is currently not facing charges.  

Firefighters Rescue Dog From Winston-Salem Apartment (Winston-Salem, NC)

Winston-Salem firefighters are being credited for saving a dog from a burning home.  The blaze broke out Sunday morning at an apartment on Cherry Street.  Pictures posted on social media showed firefighters carrying a dog that was wrapped in a blanket and near an oxygen tank.  No people were hurt, but two men are displaced.
